About the experience

A guided aerial yoga session at Flux School of Arts on Sunday, 25 October, followed by a healthy breakfast at the studio.

THE IDEA

Most of us have spent years doing the sensible version of fitness: the walk, the gym, the yoga mat in the corner of the bedroom. Aerial yoga is the opposite of sensible. We hang in a soft fabric hammock, let it take our weight, and find that our body can still do things it hasn't done since we were a child. Hanging upside down, swinging a little, trusting something to hold us.

That's the whole point of this morning. It's an hour of trying something slightly unfamiliar, with an instructor who knows how to make it safe, in a room of people who are all a little unsure in exactly the same way. Then everyone sits down together over a good breakfast and talks about it.

We are doing it at Flux School of Arts because aerial yoga needs the right rigging, the right space and a trained instructor.

WHY IT'S WORTH YOUR SUNDAY MORNING

The short answer: you get to try aerial yoga properly, safely, in a small group, and you leave having actually met people, not just stood near them.

  1. A real first experience, not a taster. A full hour with a trained instructor at a studio built for this. With only 16 people, the instructor can see everyone and adjust for each body in the room.
  2. Small by design. Eight pods, two people to a pod. It's what keeps the session personal and the breakfast table a single conversation instead of three separate ones.
  3. The pod is where the connecting happens. Sharing a pod means you're spotting each other, laughing at the first wobbly inversion, cheering when someone gets it.
  4. Breakfast is part of the experience, not an afterthought. A smoothie bowl and fresh juice, served at the studio right after the session. This is when the room loosens up and nobody is rushing off.
  5. It's gentle on the body. The hammock takes much of your weight, so the session is ideal even for complete beginners. You don't need to be flexible or fit to start. You just need to be curious.

HOW THE MORNING RUNS

Roughly two hours end to end: arrive, an hour in the hammocks, then breakfast together.

  1. Arrival and settling in (about 15 minutes): Check in, change, meet your pod partner. The instructor walks everyone through the hammocks and what to expect, and asks about any injuries or conditions.
  2. Guided aerial yoga (about 1 hour): Warm-up on the ground, then into the hammocks. Supported stretches, gentle swings, and for those who want it, a first inversion. Everything is optional; nobody is pushed past what they're comfortable with.
  3. Cool-down: A slow finish, often lying cocooned in the hammock. A quiet few minutes before everyone comes back down to earth.
  4. Breakfast together (about 45 minutes): Smoothie bowls and fresh juices at the studio. One table, unhurried, with room to talk about how it went.

WHO IS IT FOR

Anyone who is curious about aerial yoga, men and women alike, with no experience needed.

It suits people who used to be active and have drifted, people who do regular yoga and want to try something new, and people who have never done either but have always wondered. It also works well for couples, friends, or a parent and grown-up child who want to do something together that isn't another dinner out.
