About the experience

Background

Some places carry more than just beautiful views. Avani Betta, a hill about 80 km east of Bangalore, is one of them. Steeped in Ramayana mythology and dotted with temples that date back to the 10th century, it offers something rare: a trek that gives you equal parts adventure, history, and spirituality.

According to legend, Avani is the site where the sage Valmiki had his hermitage - and where Sita sought refuge after being exiled, giving birth to her twin sons Lava and Kusha here. The hill is also believed to be the location of the Ashwamedha Yagna. As you make your way up through 660 steps and rocky boulders, you pass numerous temples dedicated to figures from the Ramayana - Sita, Lakshmana, Valmiki, the Pandavas - each with its own story. These stories come to life as you climb, turning a moderately physical morning into something much richer.

At the summit, the mythology gives way to something quieter: sweeping views of the Karnataka countryside, a cool breeze, and a moment to simply take it all in.

The Experience - How the Day Unfolds

  1. 8:00 AM - Meet at Swati Hotel and Cafe on the Kolar Highway, approximately 1 hour from Bangalore. Hot breakfast is served here - local, authentic, and the perfect fuel for the morning ahead. This is the group's official meeting point; all participants converge here before heading to Avani together.
  2. From there, the group drives in their respective vehicles to Avani village, approximately another hour's drive.
  3. At the base of the hill, cars are parked and the trek begins. The group moves up the hill through 660 steps and rocky terrain, pausing at temples en-route to witness their historical and mythological significance.
  4. At the summit - the Sita and Parvati temple at the top - the group settles in to take in panoramic views of the surrounding hills and the Karnataka countryside. Water and light snacks are served here while the group relaxes and catches up.
  5. The group descends, returns to their vehicles, and makes their way back to Bangalore independently.

What You Will See on the Trek

The trail is as much a heritage walk as it is a trek. Along the 660 steps from base to summit, you will encounter:

  1. Sri Ramalingeshwara Temple complex at the base - a cluster of 10th-century temples from the Nolamba dynasty, with shrines dedicated to Lord Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata, and Shatrughana. The intricate carvings here offer a glimpse of the region's architectural heritage.
  2. Numerous temples along the trail - housing Shivalingas and stone formations linked to the Ramayana, including shrines to Sita, Valmiki, and the legendary birthplace of Lava and Kusha.
  3. Stone formations believed to mark wishes made by pilgrims and visitors over generations.
  4. Sita and Goddess Parvati temple at the summit.
  5. Panoramic views of the Karnataka countryside, neighbouring hills, and the landscape below.
