Aprisio Presents: A Morning with Art
An intimate art experience from Baroque Italy to modern India
Aprisio in partnership with ArtMantram invites its community to an unforgettable morning at the National Gallery of Modern Art, (NGMA) Bengaluru, to witness a piece of world art history — Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy, a rare, original painting by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, exhibited in India for the first time. The visit would also include a viewing of Sanhita – an exhibition of art owned by Air India.
This guided experience is part of Aprisio’s mission to curate soulful, cultural encounters that stimulate the mind, stir emotion, and spark conversation. The Experience is designed to gently introduce Baroque art to both seasoned art lovers and curious cultural explorers, connecting the chiaroscuro of 17th-century Italy to the sensibilities of contemporary India. Additionally, we would also like to bring attention to Sanhita - an exhibition of art owned by Air India.
Significance of the Experience
For the first time in Bengaluru’s history, an original painting by famed Italian baroque artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio is on display at a city gallery. 'Mary Magdalen in Ecstasy' an oil on canvas painted in 1606 was unveiled at the National Gallery of Modern Art, (NGMA) Bengaluru on Friday, 13th June 2025. The exhibition was inaugurated by Andrea Anastasio, Director of the Italian Cultural Centre and Sanjeev Kishor Goutam, Director General of NGMA. Italian Consul General Alfonso Tagliaferri was also present.
Painted while Caravaggio was on the run for murder, the work arrived in Bengaluru after a month-long show at the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, Delhi. This marks the first original Caravaggio ever brought to India. City business leaders Rezwan Razack, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, and Geetanjali Kirloskar helped secure the artwork through private donations. The painting is displayed at NGMA’s ground floor gallery, alongside an eight-minute immersive VR experience on Caravaggio’s life and work. It stands in the centre of an arch, surrounded by dark grey walls.
Aprisio is leveraging this opportunity to organize a guided tour of this painting since this is truly a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience. We will also be spending some time visiting Sanhita – an exhibition of art owned by Air India which is currently on display at the NGMA, Bengaluru.
