Living longer in better health: Six shifts needed for healthy aging

The report investigates the global demographic shift toward an aging population, projected to reach 1.6 billion adults over 65 by 2050. It emphasizes that while life expectancy has increased, years spent in poor health have also risen, challenging societies to extend not just lifespan but healthspan across physical, mental, social, and spiritual dimensions. The report identifies six critical shifts required for healthy aging: investing in prevention, improving health measurement and data, scaling proven interventions, accelerating innovation in aging ecosystems, leveraging all industries to support aging, and empowering older adults to achieve their full potential. Notably, healthier, more engaged seniors can significantly contribute economically and socially. However, challenges such as caregiver shortages, rising healthcare costs, and social isolation must be addressed. Holistic approaches considering personal and social factors are essential to unlocking the potential of aging populations worldwide.
