Source: RNP, Ashoka, The Emerging Paradigm in Mental Health
The report analyzes how social entrepreneurs are driving systemic change in mental health by shifting societal perceptions and care models. It highlights that mental health conditions affect everyone along a spectrum influenced not just by biology but also social, economic, and political factors. Current paradigms focus narrowly on treating illness medically, often segregating care to specialists, and limiting patient agency. In contrast, the emerging paradigm emphasizes treating the whole person, decentralizing care into communities, promoting human rights, and involving those with lived experience in decision-making. This approach aims to expand access to support, reduce stigma, and prioritize prevention and inclusion. India, with a high and rapidly growing burden, particularly stands to benefit from such holistic, rights-based, and community-centered innovations. The report presents social entrepreneurs as catalysts for a mental health system that values well-being, equity, and systemic transformation.
